What to expect at your first Reiki treatment

Trying something new—especially something you can’t fully explain—can feel a little intimidating. If you’ve been curious about Reiki but aren’t quite sure what happens during a session, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I hear from first-time clients.

My goal with this blog is simple: to help you feel informed, comfortable, and supported before you ever walk through the door.

First things first: you don’t need to “believe” in Reiki

One of the biggest misconceptions about Reiki is that you have to believe in it for it to work. You don’t. Reiki doesn’t rely on faith, visualization skills, or doing anything “right.” All you need to do is show up and allow yourself to rest.

Many people come in feeling skeptical, stressed, emotionally drained, or simply curious—and that’s perfectly okay.

What happens when you arrive

When you arrive for your session, you’ll be welcomed into a lightly dimmed, calm, safe space designed to help your nervous system begin to relax right away. We’ll take a few minutes to talk—nothing intense or overwhelming—just a brief check-in about how you’re feeling and what brought you in. Before the session begins, I show you exactly what I do while you are relaxing, explain why Im doing it and encourage answer any questions you may have about my "Ritual” . I have 15 years experience with Reiki and over those years, I have intuitively created a ritual that I believe best serves you.

Every Reiki session with me includes a brief guided meditation (I read this to you while you are laying on the table). I also check your chakras with my Buddha pendulum. This gives me an idea of how your energy centers are operating. Next, I will use an essential oil of your liking, and with my feather, I will cleanse and smooth your energetic system with this scent. All this paired with specific high frequency music is sure to get you relaxed right away! The Reiki sessions then begins!

You’re always welcome to ask questions. There is no rush and never any pressure.

During the Reiki session:

You’ll remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a soft, warm, table with a weighted eye pillow, if you choose, and soft fluffy pillows. Low Himalayan salt lamp lighting, soft cozy blankets, aromatherapy and gentle high frequency music help create a soothing environment for you. Once you’re settled, the session begins.

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on or hands-above-the-body energy practice. I may place my hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, following a traditional sequence over your 7 main Chakras. If you ever feel uncomfortable, adjustments are always made—your comfort comes first.

Many people experience:
• Deep relaxation
• A sense of warmth or tingling
• Emotional release
• Feeling grounded or calm
• Or simply falling asleep

There is no “right” way to experience Reiki. Some people feel a lot; others feel very subtle shifts. Some people may see colors, some might not. All are normal and beneficial.

What you might feel emotionally:

Reiki works not only on the physical body but also on emotional and energetic levels. You may notice emotions surface—peace, relief, clarity, or even unexpected feelings. You might even cry! This doesn’t mean anything is wrong; it’s often a sign that your body is releasing stored tension or stress- which is all part of the healing process.

Everything that comes up is welcomed and held in a safe, supportive space. Anything that is brought up during your Reiki session is intended to be brought to your attention for your highest and greatest good.

After the session:

After your session is over, we meet for a few minutes to discuss the session. Each Reiki session includes 15 minutes before the session begins and 15 minutes after it ends for discussion. Due to the high demand of additional guided information from a session, I have added an additional option you can add to the length of your session. These Intuitive Guidance times can be added to any length Reiki session! Intuitive guidance sessions are offered in 15 minute increments so you are able to choose the amount of time feels right to you.

Many clients report feeling lighter, calmer, more balanced, or deeply rested. Some notice immediate changes, while others experience shifts over the next few days. Drinking water and allowing yourself some quiet time afterward can help integrate the experience. I encourage journaling after each of your sessions.

There’s no downtime required—you can return to your day feeling refreshed and more centered.

Is Reiki right for you?

Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and supportive for people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a Japanese form of relaxation and supports your body’s innate ability to heal itself on all levels. It can be especially helpful if you’re feeling:

• Stressed or overwhelmed
• Emotionally drained
• Disconnected from yourself
• Curious about holistic healing

A final note from me:

Your first Reiki experience isn’t about fixing anything. It’s about giving your body and mind permission to rest, reset, and receive support from Universal Life Force Energy (Reiki) . You don’t need to know what to expect perfectly—just being open to the experience is enough!

If you’re curious about Reiki and would like to experience it for yourself, I offer sessions at Saratoga Reiki Room at 188 Lake Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY 12804. You’re always welcome to reach out with questions or book when it feels right for you.
